Mr. Fern is president of Time-to-Profit, a consultancy focused on project management and product development. His career in Information Technology and Product Development began in 1973. He has held director level positions with Sprint, Control Data Corporation, and TRW. He earned an MS in Technology Management from Pepperdine University in 1992 and his Project Management Professional designation in 1998. Ed teaches project management, business process improvement, and product development.

1992 to 1994 - Infonet Services Corporation (British Telecom)

Director, Network Engineering and Operations

  • Improved Infonet’s European marketing effort by implementing a second "showpiece" Network Control Center in Brussels.
  • Enhanced Infonet’s domestic marketing effort by building a new "showpiece" Network Control Center in El Segundo.
  • Introduced an SNMP manager of managers to monitor and control network elements.
  • Optimized Infonet's network topology to reduce circuit costs from 30.4% to 25.6% of network service revenue.

1987 to 1992 - TRW, Information Services Division (Experian)

Director, Data Services 

  • Implemented the Bankruptcy Notification product which reduced the average personal bankruptcy notification time from six weeks to seventy-two hours. This product generates in excess of $100K per month.
  • Created a certification program to validate third party systems used by customers in buying and evaluating credit reports and influencing credit report buying decisions in excess of $15 million each month.
  • Consolidated data entry operations from eleven locations to a single operation. Eliminated a customer disturbing 42 day backlog and reduced staff by 34%.

Director, Network Services

  • Integrated the voice and data networks of two nationwide credit reporting entities, driving combined operating expenses and head count down by nearly 17% in the post-integration year.
  • Re-engineered the distribution network to provide diverse data paths to volume customers while reducing running rate costs by 20%.
  • Initiated outsourcing of the X.25, dial portion of the network to achieve a 60% operating cost reduction.
  • Led the disaster recovery team that restored network service within 17 hours following the 1989 San Francisco Bay Area earthquake.

Manager, Advanced Technologies

  • Introduced DB2 to rewrite the billing system to meet customer demand for enhanced reporting capabilities, consolidation, and volume discount flexibility.

1985 to 1986 - Control Data Corporation

Marketing Services Consultant

  • Provided presales marketing and technical support for the Supra-Link product for the electronic circuit design simulation, nuclear power plant, and petroleum reservoir modeling markets.
  • Prepared technical responses to requests for proposals, involving mainframes, operating systems, applications and telecommunications.

1973 to 1985 - United Telecom, Inc. (Sprint)

Director, Systems Development

  • Developed Supra-Link, an integrated hardware and telecommunications software system service offering which provided remote access to United's Cray super computer from user VAX operating system environments.
  • Managed twenty-two systems analysts responsible for maintenance and enhancement of a proprietary operating system software.

1974 to 1986 – Residential Investment Associates

  • Arranged financing, acquired, and managed residential rental properties.
